iPhone Sound Issues

So I woke up in the morning to find out that my iPhone sound was not working. Even if I tried making a call, I couldn’t hear anything, except on loud speaker. I could not here the click’s and taps. I powered the phone off/on. Nothing. I reboot it. Nothing. Then I went to the Apple forums.

It could be one of two things:

1. Your silent mode is on. Look for the little toggle button on top of the volume button. If the red is showing, it’s on silent. Flick it and see if that changes anything.
2. The earphone jack needs to be reseated. Power the phone off/on. Take your earphone pin and plug it in and out three times.

For me it was the second one. It worked right away.

Hope this helps everyone.

  3. I had the EXACT same problem with my iPhone. It was the second one for me . . . .Thanks!

  4. that was totally my problem, and I would have driven all the way to the Apple store to get it resolved. Thank you!

  5. no problem dude :)

  6. THANK YOU SO MUCH MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was freaking out that my iPhone wud never work the same way again lol, u r a legend, btw wat do u mean by reseated the audio jack?

    • theres a switch in the small hole where you put you headphones and when you plug then in it pushes it down. when you unplug them its supposed to switch back up and this tells your iphone wether or not your earbuds are plugged in, sometimes it gets stuck.

  7. lol don’t worry about it. The jack where you plug in your ear phones, I think it has a usability fault. I don’t know the exact mechanics but it needs to be locked back into place sometimes when you pull the wire too hard or fast or incorrectly

  8. still does not work for me

    1- i turned off iphone
2- plugged in headphone 3 times in and out
    3- checked iphone still nothing

  11. I’ve got the same problem, but the same fix doesn’t seem to work.
The phone acts as if the head phones are plugged in when they’re not and like they are unplugged when they’re plugged in. Total mind f***. I’ve tried putting/pulling the head phone jack in and out and nothing.

    What gives?

  12. dzimney, maybe you should try calling Apple or look on the forums. Maybe there’s something there?

  13. Dude you ROCK! I am still trying to fig how u did it! trial and error! whatever…thankx. Regards, theonay

  19. You’re a genius, thank you! I just had the same problem and thought the iPhone was broken. I switched it off, then back on and then put the headphones in and out three times and it worked a treat!

    :D :D :D

  20. This is the first post I checked out after googling “iphone audio not working”. Reseating the audio jack worked. I love the internet.

  21. I freaked out 2day I had the same prob and I thought it had something to do with the fact that my phone is unlocked. I called the guy and yelled at him. Then I googled iPhone sound problems. Anyway I just wanted to say 10x I was going crazy!!!!

  22. thanks, second works for me.

  23. Thank you, 3 weeks after buying it in May, this began, I can’t hear it ring when its right in front of me, also many of the songs had a funny kind of hum when playing, both issues resolved on the first try!

  24. anyone knows the problem where you can only hear one side of the headphones only? eg, the left side. how to solve this problem? thanks much help appreciated!!

  25. I have had problems with the left side of the headphones going silent twice now. Today I even checked a different headphone, but it’s something in the iPhone. However, rebooting and unplugging about 10 times solved the issue. Still puzzled though, this seems some kind of mechanical/electrical issue so I’m hoping it will not get worse.

  26. Well all the solutions so far worked for me.
    1. cleaning out the socket with a cut off ear bud and window cleaner.
    2. Powering on and of.
    3. checking the sound locks.
    all great and work
    BUT BUT BUT
why is this problem coming back so very often.
this sound problem is happening every day or so for me.
WHATS THE LONG TERM SOLUTION PLEASE ANYONE.

  27. iI’ve got the same problem, but the same fix doesn’t seem to work.
The phone acts as if the head phones are plugged in when they’re not and like they are unplugged when they’re plugged in. Total mind f***. I’ve tried putting/pulling the head phone jack in and out and nothing.

  28. i did sevral times power of/on and plug in/out..but no progress…!!! plz plz plz suggest me.

    • not power on/off. Reset. Press both the home and the power button together. keep them pressed for a few seconds, then let go of the home button keeping the power button pressed. it’ll reset your phone

  29. i really Fedup….not working yet, if there is any other idea to fix it?? Give me plzzzzzz

  30. Okay. my iPhones gone for repair. interesting to hear the outcome, will keep you posted.
Symptoms: Click lock sounds appear and disappear with no pattern.
Click OFF can sometimes return by itself but the click ON is often muffled.
and all of these symptoms cannot be rectified by all the above solutions.
If i go into the prefs and sound options and choose a ring signal i can get my sound back this way but the problem is occurring very often anyway even after this.

  31. Wow, great job on the fix, does this seem to be a common enough issue that there might be a softwear fix for it, or is this a hardware issue??

Thanks again, I thought I had a busted phone.

  32. its a hardware issue. However, I havent had it on the 3g version.

  33. well that’s a bummer then, because mine is a 3g, and I had this happen to mine.

  34. Thanks men you made my day !!

I tought my phone was broken since it didnt sound , no musice or dialing tone , I was not able to hear the people that called me. But the weird think is that the phone did ring when I called my self for testing.

To make the long story short I fixed my phone my plugin and un plugin the earphones several times as you recomended !

    Thanks

  35. OMG the second one worked, I was FREAKING out. Thank you so much!! I was about to call At&t and flip out on them!!

  36. It definitly solved my problem…I was about to call Apple support! Thanks so much! You’re the best!

  37. you’re all welcome!

  38. How very cool that this is still helping people a year and a half later. On the other hand, how sad that Apple hasn’t fixed this yet. lol

Your first fix was my problem and boy do I feel silly now. Thanks for posting this so I could figure this out. :)

  39. My problem was fixed by your 2nd suggestion. Thanks for posting your solutions that save many a trip to the Apple Store:-)

  40. Best solution found and it worked. Top person, cheers
