iPhone Sound Issues

Posted on: January 9, 2008

So I woke up in the morning to find out that my iPhone sound was not working. Even if I tried making a call, I couldn’t hear anything, except on loud speaker. I could not here the click’s and taps. I powered the phone off/on. Nothing. I reboot it. Nothing. Then I went to the Apple forums.

It could be one of two things:

1. Your silent mode is on. Look for the little toggle button on top of the volume button. If the red is showing, it’s on silent. Flick it and see if that changes anything.
2. The earphone jack needs to be reseated. Power the phone off/on. Take your earphone pin and plug it in and out three times.

For me it was the second one. It worked right away.

Hope this helps everyone.

Update by BoomBoom

Mine was wierd. The volume bar was not even showing up when i play videos or music.. Although, when i used headphones the sound worked fine. I tried these steps and found that the only thing that worked for me quickly was to:

Reset the Network Settings

1. Go to Settings
2. General
3. Scroll down to Reset
4. choose Reset Network Settings

That was it!!! You rock!! Thanks for posting the information. It was the second one for me too!

I had the EXACT same problem with my iPhone. It was the second one for me . . . .Thanks!

that was totally my problem, and I would have driven all the way to the Apple store to get it resolved. Thank you!

no problem dude 🙂

THANK YOU SO MUCH MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was freaking out that my iPhone wud never work the same way again lol, u r a legend, btw wat do u mean by reseated the audio jack?

theres a switch in the small hole where you put you headphones and when you plug then in it pushes it down. when you unplug them its supposed to switch back up and this tells your iphone wether or not your earbuds are plugged in, sometimes it gets stuck.

thnks man it really works….. u r a genius

lol don’t worry about it. The jack where you plug in your ear phones, I think it has a usability fault. I don’t know the exact mechanics but it needs to be locked back into place sometimes when you pull the wire too hard or fast or incorrectly

still does not work for me

1- i turned off iphone
2- plugged in headphone 3 times in and out
3- checked iphone still nothing
4-plugged in and out 3 times againa nd still nothing

what can i do?

There might be some dirt inside the headphone jack so try to absorb it from jack, by sucking it out with your mouth (do not approach to close to jack with your mouth so that moister won’t get in)
Then do the procedure again.
It worked for me

I don’t know then dude. You might wanna check out some other forums.

Thanx man. I had the same problem today after trying to fix a spare headphone to put it my iphone. I was starting to think I was fraked up. But thanx to your input it’s all good now.

thank you and i’ll say a little to st. google too 🙂

I’ve got the same problem, but the same fix doesn’t seem to work.
The phone acts as if the head phones are plugged in when they’re not and like they are unplugged when they’re plugged in. Total mind f***. I’ve tried putting/pulling the head phone jack in and out and nothing.

What gives?

dzimney, maybe you should try calling Apple or look on the forums. Maybe there’s something there?

Dude you ROCK! I am still trying to fig how u did it! trial and error! whatever…thankx. Regards, theonay

No problem, dude 🙂

The headphone jack was my problem too. Thanks. Worked like a charm and saved me a huge headache!

no problem rob 🙂

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeHaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! I am sooo happy!!! I have been dealing with this for a week!! This was the First site I checked!!! I too had done the reset / reboot / checked settings etc…. Thank you so much!!!

You’re a genius, thank you! I just had the same problem and thought the iPhone was broken. I switched it off, then back on and then put the headphones in and out three times and it worked a treat!

😀 😀 😀

This is the first post I checked out after googling “iphone audio not working”. Reseating the audio jack worked. I love the internet.

I freaked out 2day I had the same prob and I thought it had something to do with the fact that my phone is unlocked. I called the guy and yelled at him. Then I googled iPhone sound problems. Anyway I just wanted to say 10x I was going crazy!!!!

thanks, second works for me.

Thank you, 3 weeks after buying it in May, this began, I can’t hear it ring when its right in front of me, also many of the songs had a funny kind of hum when playing, both issues resolved on the first try!

anyone knows the problem where you can only hear one side of the headphones only? eg, the left side. how to solve this problem? thanks much help appreciated!!

right side is ur mic

I have had problems with the left side of the headphones going silent twice now. Today I even checked a different headphone, but it’s something in the iPhone. However, rebooting and unplugging about 10 times solved the issue. Still puzzled though, this seems some kind of mechanical/electrical issue so I’m hoping it will not get worse.

Well all the solutions so far worked for me.
1. cleaning out the socket with a cut off ear bud and window cleaner.
2. Powering on and of.
3. checking the sound locks.
all great and work
BUT BUT BUT
why is this problem coming back so very often.
this sound problem is happening every day or so for me.
WHATS THE LONG TERM SOLUTION PLEASE ANYONE.

you should probably go to the Apple Store and let them know that this problem is occuring, but please dont tell them you used window cleaner.

iI’ve got the same problem, but the same fix doesn’t seem to work.
The phone acts as if the head phones are plugged in when they’re not and like they are unplugged when they’re plugged in. Total mind f***. I’ve tried putting/pulling the head phone jack in and out and nothing.

try resetting your phone. Hold the power and home button together for a few seconds then let go of the home button.

i did sevral times power of/on and plug in/out..but no progress…!!! plz plz plz suggest me.

not power on/off. Reset. Press both the home and the power button together. keep them pressed for a few seconds, then let go of the home button keeping the power button pressed. it’ll reset your phone

i really Fedup….not working yet, if there is any other idea to fix it?? Give me plzzzzzz

sorry bro, maybe you should call apple.

Okay. my iPhones gone for repair. interesting to hear the outcome, will keep you posted.
Symptoms: Click lock sounds appear and disappear with no pattern.
Click OFF can sometimes return by itself but the click ON is often muffled.
and all of these symptoms cannot be rectified by all the above solutions.
If i go into the prefs and sound options and choose a ring signal i can get my sound back this way but the problem is occurring very often anyway even after this.

good luck buddy 🙂 keep us posted 🙂

Wow, great job on the fix, does this seem to be a common enough issue that there might be a softwear fix for it, or is this a hardware issue??

Thanks again, I thought I had a busted phone.

its a hardware issue. However, I havent had it on the 3g version.

well that’s a bummer then, because mine is a 3g, and I had this happen to mine.

Thanks men you made my day !!

I tought my phone was broken since it didnt sound , no musice or dialing tone , I was not able to hear the people that called me. But the weird think is that the phone did ring when I called my self for testing.

To make the long story short I fixed my phone my plugin and un plugin the earphones several times as you recomended !

Thanks

OMG the second one worked, I was FREAKING out. Thank you so much!! I was about to call At&t and flip out on them!!

It definitly solved my problem…I was about to call Apple support! Thanks so much! You’re the best!

you’re all welcome!

How very cool that this is still helping people a year and a half later. On the other hand, how sad that Apple hasn’t fixed this yet. lol

Your first fix was my problem and boy do I feel silly now. Thanks for posting this so I could figure this out. 🙂

My problem was fixed by your 2nd suggestion. Thanks for posting your solutions that save many a trip to the Apple Store:-)

Best solution found and it worked. Top person, cheers

Just brilliant, thank you, all my sound was playing at half speed, the second one worked a treat straight away, saved me a trip to the apple store!

Thank you so much! I’m new to the iPhone so … But for me it was the 1st one, I had no idea what the little red light meant! 🙂

Today, sir, you are my hero. 🙂

Mine was wierd. The volume bar was not even showing up when i play videos or music.. Although, when i used headphones the sound worked fine. I tried these steps and found that the only thing that worked for me quickly was to:

Thank you so much for the valuable info. I thought of going to Maxis Center to fix the problem when I saw your blog.

Thank you! I actually had the same prob as “BoomBoom” and his fix worked great, I just got this IPhone and its my baby. So i’m stressing, think I should still go by Apple soon to get repaired while still on guarantie?

yep, works perfect.

Thanks. U made my day. I never noticed that I have the silence button on. Lol I never use it so I forgot that it actually exists. Lol

Tks…

This information really helped me, I am sharing with a few friends….

clean headphone jack with cotton bud, it really works 🙂 🙂

All I had to do was flicker the silent switch twice thnx!!

what do you mean by message “this accessories is not made to work with iphone? would like to turn on the airplane mode to reduce audio reference? you might not make or recieve call?

it always appear this message every time i play my song and play my games and i dont hear any sound at all.. what seems to be the problem with my iphone??

Wow didn’t think of the toggle. How dumb I am.

Hey I got my iPhone 4 yesterday and everything was working fine. But today the sound keeps going on and off my brother played with my iPhone and suddenly the sound started working. I was shocked but now it’s gone off again, ive never used my headphones and today I used them and it seemed to help but the sound keeps going. I’ve resetted it via iTunes and everything I did sleep mode a moment ago and nothing happened I’m about to try the earbud thing I hope it works but If it don’t does anyone have any solutions.

please help.. I don’t know if the problem of my iphone 4 is ear phone or ear jack? and what can i do to fix this? What’s happening is when I used earphone and when I adjusted volume of mp3 to the maximum level, there’s a sound, but have noise, AND when I adjusted the volume level to the middle, there has no sound at all, which supposed to at least have sound lower, right?

pLEASe help me on this…

k i went to setting then general then accessibility and scroll down to where it says mono audio right under it u will see a L on the left and an R on the right put the cursor right in the middle it might be set to one side which causes it to only play sound through the side its set on that was my problem i believe resetting the head phones the way he did it does the same thing hope it helps most of u enjoy 🙂

I thought the #2 idea was crazy– it totally works! Thanks!

iPhone 4, sound kinda works for texts and rings. But when I go to play muisc through the speakers of the phone the volume bar isnt even there anymore it just shows pause and play. I called apple they said they can fix it for 59.99, I’d rather not do that if I don’t have to, anyone know about a fix or has/had the same problem?

my iPhone was fall on ground 2 days back… n then it wrks proprly bt after 2 3 dys it does not showing me the volum up and down when i press the side volume buttons. when i put head phone in it works …bt without head phone ir remain same issue…

Fantastic. Post 69 by Pedro was very helpful. It works! Just move the mono audio button to the middle.
Wasted 3 months on iphone returns and it still did not work.
